A child’s world is her community.  Through contact with the child’s community a teacher can better come to know her and to plan for her learning. 


In order to teach the children in my classroom successfully, I strive to recognize the unique importance of each segment of the community in their lives.  I have sought to engage and collaborate with members of the community, so that we can work toward the creation of a better, healthier learning environment for the children of our school.  Alone, I cannot hope to bring any child to her full potential, but working together with other members of the community, I can help to make each child a successful well-rounded member of society.

As a student teacher, I did not engage a great deal in communicating with parents. I would have liked to have shown a PowerPoint presentation like this to the parents of my students in this school year. However, my role as a student teacher was essentially a temporary one. I look forward to the time when I have a class that is my responsibility because I think I will enjoy communicating with parents. Unfortunately, I did not spend a great deal of effort communicating with my students' parents last year. Perhaps this was due to the ambiguity of my role at the school. I was a teacher but also a student. If I were to do this presentation over again I think I would provide more room for the discussion of curriculum (especially in the light of fairly recent changes in the Kindergarten program).

During my practicum, I had many opportunities to encounter the warm and generous spirit of my colleagues. Every Thursday we would meet and discuss matters of the school. I attended Character Education meetings and volunteered to assist my colleagues in the implementation of this program. The first major theme of the year was safety. My role was mainly taking pictures for a safety display. I found that my students were often crossing the street (to get to the playground) in a very unsafe manner. As a result a good number of the pictures I took were pictures of students crossing the street -- safely! A large number of pictures were never taken, because I often found that there was a student that I needed to assist in crossing the street, and other recess related activities.

This is a representation of a gift I received from two of my friends from math club. Once every week we would meet early in the morning before classes started and discuss math problems or look at issues that they found troublesome at the time. I have never eaten such a delicious dish of spring rolls before in my life. I found the experience to be a very educational; as it is quite easy to be wrapped up in the grade and students that you are teaching, forgetting about the broader school community. This math club drew me out, so to speak, and allowed me to engage the school community in a very gratifying way.
