"Effective teachers are committed to career-long learning."

Just as I expect my doctor to keep up with the latest in medical advances, I also expect that teachers will constantly be on top of the latest techniques of teaching and learning.  The facts and theories of most disciplines can change dramatically over the decades, requiring that teachers keep up to date in all relevant fields.

As a model to my students, I recognize that I cannot expect them to enjoy learning if I myself do not enjoy it.  I have always taken great pleasure in investigating new things and learning new ideas.  I believe that it is impossible to be a good teacher without learning from students and day-to-day activities.  As I teach my students, I learn from them.  Not only do I learn how to better teach them, but also, I learn how to be a better human being.  This is an essential understanding for anybody whose work is primarily with people and not objects or ideas.

Artefact One Artefact One -- A list of links for eclectic learning over a lifetime

This artefact is a list of links that I have uncovered over the past few weeks and months. I constantly find that my knowledge in a certain area is lacking, but this is no hardship since I love to learn. I have found the Internet to be a very valuable resource, especially sites that provide journals and e-texts.

Reflection On Artefact Two

This artefact is an excerpt from my field experience evaluation form. During my practicum, I spent a significant amount of time assisting others with computer technologies. This artefact in particular refers to the times I helped the classroom assistant and my cooperating teacher with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. The staff of any given school has a collaborative expertise that is hard to estimate. It seems only reasonable that members of the school community educate and troubleshoot for one another whenever possible.

Artefact Three Learning to play the mandolin

Reflection on Artefact Three

My desire to learn is not restricted to academics. I picked up this mandolin about two and a half years ago and have been trying to learn how to play it ever since -- I am not talented. In my experiences, thus far, I have found that music is extremely helpful especially in division one. I practiced singing and doing little finger plays whenever I could, because the students found the time spent this way enjoyable. Division 1 students learn a great deal about language, movement and math when exposed to music.
