Modern experts in the humanities have drastically changed our view of the individual in the last 20 years.  Human psychology and other fields of the human sciences have amassed a great deal of data and theoretical understanding on the development and growth of individuals.  In the classroom, this data and knowledge becomes translated into a wide variety of teaching and assessment strategies, which endeavor to reach all individuals and all learning styles.

Not only should teachers keep up to date on new theories and techniques of teaching, but they must also become familiar with their students.  Knowing my students means that I know how best to teach them.  Understanding their points of view, their weaknesses and strengths, allows me as a teacher to plan lessons, and concept development strategies, that will be successful for them.  In planning my units and lessons, I find that my lessons become infinitely more successful as I come to know my students -- a teacher cannot succeed without constant revision.

Reflection On Artefact One

The 'Bug Box', as I call it, is a very useful math tool for Kindergarten children. The box is filled with shredded newspaper and some rubber creatures.  The students have a great time playing with the little beetles and frogs that are inside. They cannot see the creatures when they are running their hands through this box so it is good for motor-skill development.  In addition, I encourage them to count the creatures as they take them out.  When they have counted 8 beetles and 4 frogs, they know the box is empty!  I firmly believe that manipulatives are essential in all grades. I will most certainly use the experience I gained in Kindergarten to design or discover useful and fun manipulatives for any grade that I teach. Learning should be done with your fingers, and it has to be fun.

Please read my reflection while you are waiting for the song to load (this should take about 20- 40 seconds depending on your connection speed). Once the seek bar in the sound file plug-in is entirely white, you can safely click the play button.

Reflection On Artefact Two

My voice is a little rusty. I have not been singing on a regular basis since I finished my practicum. My students genuinely enjoyed our singing time together - and so did I! They always enjoy doing the actions that go with the songs. As a strategy for teaching literacy and oral skills, music has been a powerful device in my classroom.

Reflection On Artefact Three

I attended a workshop on balanced literacy a month ago. This artefact is the front cover of the document we used for our discussions. I strongly believe that literature is fundamental to learning in all of the subjects not just the language arts. The ideas and relationships with the world that we uncover when we read a story are not replaceable by textbooks or worksheets. However, worksheets and textbooks do have their place when centred in an activity that begins with a good piece of literature.
